Powered up poppies
On the drive west from Lancaster, poppies start to appear long before getting to the most heavily flower-covered hills. A glimpse off the road shows them to grow just about anywhere.
Even under power lines.

Ubiquitous Poppies
Delays on the train this morning made me late for work but it did give me a little while to spot these little guys growing up through the rocks next to the tracks:
California poppies. (Notice those orange blooms.)
It's no coincidence that they're the state flower: they grow everywhere (and can also be seen in these other posts).

Look what popped up
Some wild California poppies growing in a field (as of March 27).
Growing where?
In the wilds of... downtown Los Angeles. (Specifically on the hill next to 4th and Hill.)

A succulent cactus,
Birds of paradise,
And... let's go with... California poppies.(The first two were in the garden, but the last was growing wild in a field.)

Around the poppies
Part of a barbed wire fence that isn't keeping anyone away from the fields near the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve.

Exposed for 1/13 of a second in bright midday sunlight, the subject is too bright to be made out:
Reduced to 1/40 of a second, it's a tiny bit clearer but still way too bright:
Only at 1/500 of a second do the California poppies show their brilliance rather than the sun's brightness:
