Kohlrabi (purple)
A couple somewhat over-exposed shots of this unusual... cabbage (apparently), with the leaves removed. (Taken at a farmer's market with the little point-n-shoot.)
If your camera has it, try setting it for 1 stop underexposure when you find yourself in lighting situations like this. The automatic meter over compensated for the dark areas. I find digital shots tolerate some underexposure better than overexposure; underexposed shots are easier to fix in a photo-editing program.
Besides the slight overexposure, the mixed lighting -- sunlight and shadows -- has also caused bluish shadows. Do you ever play around with your camera's color balance to remove blue from shadow areas? I set mine to "Open Shade" or "Overcast" and it does cut down on the bluish shadows -- but the trade off is everything not in shadow takes on a yellowish hue.

Photography -- it's always a trade-off.
