Wasn't Google or one of the other search engines working on an image search program that would use the outline or silohouette of an image to match it up with a similar object? The spikey pod would be a good test for it.
It looks like it may be a sweet gum tree, but that was from a comment left on the aminus3 posting, not from any image searching application.
I admit I was not aware of such a thing (although the amount of things I don't know about is a considerable number, alas); I do wonder how it could do that. (But I don't doubt it's possible.)
